What is OYAP?
OYAP promotes careers in the skilled professions. OYAP meets the needs of students who are considering apprenticeship as a pathway to full-time, life-long employment immediately after graduating.
- OYAP gives you the opportunity to receive apprenticeship training.
- You receive apprenticeship training at no cost.
- You obtain credits towards earning your Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
- You will be applying to apprentice in a specific trade. A trade is a type of work that requires “hands-on” skills.
- Most trades require you to have an apprenticeship license in order to work in the trade.
- Apprenticeship training allows you to learn the skills while working with qualified trades people.
- Some training takes place in the classroom.
- You must be registered in a 2, 3, or 4 credit Cooperative Education course at your school.
- You will have a Personalized Placement Learning Plan (PPLP) which provides the framework for this learning opportunity.
- You will spend a majority of your time at the workplace and also complete an in-school pre-placement session.
- To be eligible, you must: Be at least 16 years of age.
- Be enrolled in high school full time. Have at least 16 credits.
- Students enrolled in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program can accumulate hundreds of hours of hands-on experience, make connections with people who can help them today and tomorrow and, may “earn while they learn”.
